LB Woods to see plenty of work

Posted by Chris Brown on December 11, 2010 – 12:05 pm

This late in the regular season you don’t often see a player the caliber of LB Pierre Woods on the waiver wire. Buffalo knows how fortunate they were to pick him up and they intend to use him right away this Sunday against the Browns.

“We feel really fortunate to have that happen and he could be a guy that could be a player for the future, not just a stop gap right now,” said head coach Chan Gailey. “He could be a guy that really plays long term for us because he does have the measurables. He is a very quick study. He’s going to play special teams this week, he’s going to play on our defense this week. He’s come a long way in a short period of time.”

Looks for Woods to rotate in and out with Arthur Moats at outside linebacker on the defensive side of the ball, while also playing on cover teams against the Browns.

LB Woods willing and able

Claimed off waivers earlier this week, LB Pierre Woods is working hard to get the terminology in Buffalo’s playbook down in a short period of time.

“I’m working hard at it,” Woods said. “I’m going to go out there and whatever the coach asks me to do I’ll go out there and try to do to the best of my ability and play to win and that’s what I’m here for.”

Woods likely won’t see time on defense after less than a week to get accustomed to Buffalo’s scheme, but he is an accomplished special teams player and could see time on coverage units.

He was cut by the Patriots on Sept. 4th, but was re-signed by New England Nov. 17th. During those two months instead of collecting unemployment, Woods went to work as a groundskeeper at his alma mater, Michigan.

“I was just a groundskeeper, going around, cutting grass, picking up trash, basically whatever they asked me to do, just working,” said Woods.

When he was asked why he chose to do that, Woods plainly said.

“Because I’m not lazy. It was something to do. I didn’t want to sit at home and be a bump on a log.”

Sounds pretty old school, like when players had jobs in the offseason. Got to give him credit for that.

LB Woods a good add

Posted by Chris Brown on December 6, 2010 – 6:04 pm

Getting a player with Woods’ experience in the 3-4 and ability on special teams is a rare add this late in the season.

Most experienced players are not available this late in the season. To get a five-year vet with experience in the 3-4 and with good size to boot (6’5″ 255) is a pretty fortunate situation.

It’s not completely certain that the Patriots had intentions to bring Woods back in the near future after releasing him last week, but as of this past Saturday his name plate was still on his locker in the New England locker room.
