He knows the NFL, after 14-years as a player, and five as an assistant coach.

And Frank Reich knows the Buffalo Bills, after spending 10-years as a backup quarterback with the team.

The architect of the greatest comeback in NFL history says both of the men the Bills have interviewed for their head coaching vacancy in Arizona this week would make good head coaches for the team.

Appearing on The John Murphy Show Thursday night, Reich said former Arizona Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt would make a great Head Coach in Buffalo.

“I know Buffalo,” Reich said on the radio show. “I know ‘Whis.’ I just think it’s a good fit for him. He’s got the track record to back it up. I know he had struggles, but every coach has struggles in this league. I’d be excited. I hope he gets it.”

“There are not a lot of coaches that have been real successful in Arizona,” added Reich. “‘Whis’ took a team to the Super Bowl there –that says a lot. He’s from Pittsburgh, so there are a lot of things about his candidacy, if I can call it that, that make him a real strong candidate.”

Reich spent last year as the wide receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. He was dismissed by the Cardinals Monday, along with Whisenhunt and the rest of Arizona’s offensive staff. But he says if Whisenhunt winds up as the Head Coach in Buffalo, he’d like to tag along.

“Obviously, I think I have a good relationship with ‘Whis,’ and I would be knocking on his door if he got the job, saying, ‘bring me along with you, I would love to go back to Buffalo.,” Reich told John Murphy.

Reich also had positive words for Arizona’s current Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton, who interviewed for the Bills Head Coaching vacancy earlier this week.

“There’s something about Ray. He’s got a great demeanor,” Reich said. “He’s kind of a laid back guy, but you know he means business. He’s done a phenomenal job with our defense. I think he’s got a great feel for players. I definitely think he’s a head coaching personality kind of a guy. I think he deserves a shot.”

Reich is watching the Buffalo situation closely, as he gets ready for his next job as an assistant coach in the NFL. After ten succesful years as Jim Kelly’s backup with the Bills, he’s already thinking about possibly coming back to the franchise.

“It would be kinda fun,” he said. “Once I got into coaching, I’ve always told Linda (his wife), ‘I don’t know the future, but it seems inevitable we’re going to wind up back in Buffalo.’ Who knows? I’ve stopped listening to all this stuff because you just don’t know anything right now; I don’t think anybody’s going to let any secrets out. You just gotta sit tight and wait until Russ Brandon makes his decision.”

The John Murphy Show airs weeknights from 7-9pm on the flagship station of the Bills, WGR Sports Radio 550.

If a subsequent Associated Press report is correct, the Bills will have first crack at the innovative offensive coach.

According to the AP, Kelly will interview with the Bills on Friday, a day after the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. Kelly is considered on of the hotter NFL coaching candidates in the college ranks.

Bills President and CEO Russ Brandon, GM Buddy Nix, Assistant GM Doug Whaley and Sr. VP of Football Administration Jim Overdorf have all been in Arizona since Tuesday interviewing potential coaching candidates. The search committee has already interviewed former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt and current Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton.

Buffalo’s search committee is then expected to travel to Denver this weekend for a reported weekend interview with Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. That report also came from the Associated Press.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who is still under contract, is a serious consideration for the head coaching post of the club and completed his second interview with his current employer today. He also interviewed with Cleveland executives on Tuesday. He just spoke to the media out in Arizona about his coaching prospects. Here are some of the highlights, courtesy of the Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers, including Horton’s admission that he’s meeting with the Bills later today.

When asked if he had an idea as to when the Cardinals would decide who their next head coach would be, this was Horton’s answer.

“Michael (Bidwill) going to do his due diligence and talk to whoever he does,” said Horton. ”It’s a process. When I met with Cleveland, they have a process and after I meet with Buffalo today I’m sure they will have a process and they want to talk and evaluate. I’m sure when each team feels it’s the right time they’ll pull the trigger. I’m not in a hurry.”

Q. What’s your schedule?

A. “I’ve got an interview with Buffalo this afternoon (Wednesday). And that’s the last one on the book. I’ve heard rumors, not substantiated by me, that Kansas City and San Diego are interested. I don’t know that because I haven’t talked to my agent today.

“I was very impressed with what went on here today, how things were presented going forward with what we want to do here.”

Q. Would Arizona be your No.1 choice?

A. “Oh, easy. For a number of reasons. I like the organizational structure and then I love the fan base. For me, it’s been an amazing fan acceptance of me, whether at the game or on the street. That plays a lot, where the community appreciates what you do.”

Q. If they bring someone else in for the job, and you don’t get another head coaching job, can you be content being the defensive coordinator?

A. “I’ve never thought that way. I don’t think that way. I’ve never posed the question to myself.”

Q. I just did.

A. “Yea, you did. What’s your answer? I don’t think that way. Those things come around the corner and I’m always ‘the glass is overflowing-full.’ I’m excited about the opportunity here and the fantastic interview I had with Cleveland last night and going to try to knock Buffalo’s socks off.”

As the coaching carousel begins to spin across the NFL, a report out of Arizona is indicating that Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is expected to draw interest from two NFL teams, one of which is the Bills.

The Arizona Republic is reporting that Horton is expected to draw interest from both the Bills and Browns, two teams now searching for a new head coach. Horton was not among the casualties in Arizona, where head coach Ken Whisenhunt, GM Rod Graves and Asst. head coach Russ Grimm were fired. Here’s the pertinent part what Republic Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers wrote.

Ray Horton will be a candidate for the head coaching job in Arizona. If he doesn’t get that one, or another one, he returns as DC. I’m hearing Horton is likely to interview with Cleveland and Buffalo, at the least.
