It was only the first day on the field for Bills rookies. But first round pick Sammy Watkins was a clear standout at the first rookie minicamp session.
Watkins went through the individual drills without a dropped pass and showed fluid route running and a good burst after the catch. He was called upon to make some difficult catches during the 1-hour 20-minute workout, and he made them, including a couple thrown down around his knees.
After practice, Watkins said he’s just doing his job.
“My job is to catch the ball,” he said, “I can’t control where the quarterback is throwing it. Even though EJ is not out here, anybody throwing the ball, my job is to run the route and have the proper yardage, the proper depth and get back to the ball and catch the ball. Wherever the ball is , if my hand touches it I have to catch it.”
Watkins and the Bills rookies will be back on the practice field tomorrow for their second minicamp workout.
