Travis Henry using victim defense

According to the Denver Post, attorneys for Travis Henry in his federal drug trafficking case are taking an interesting position in an effort to get him a lighter sentence.

They’re claiming Henry was taken advantage of by his co-defendants, as Henry was simply the man behind the money needed to fund the operation. They’re claiming he was duped.

Now I’m not going to be one to dispute that he was duped, but you’ve got to believe the word “coke” or some synonym of it was used at some point in the conversation when Henry’s co-defendants asked him for a sizable sum of money.

Once you hear “coke” I’d like to think you’d run the other way. But that obviously didn’t happen with Henry.

Personally I think it’s a long shot, but you can’t blame the attorneys for trying. That’s their job. But the feds are not known for going light on sentencing especially when drugs are involved.

The tune unfortunately just doesn’t change for Travis Henry. According to the Florida Ledger, Henry was picked up for a bond violation.

He had reportedly consumed alcohol which was a violation of that bond. Now in the custody of U.S. Marshals, Henry has three court dates scheduled for this month all concerning child support. The father of 11 (by 10 women) owes more than $16K in support.

He’s also facing at least a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking. Still sad to see for a guy that had a productive career and then threw it away with one bad decision after another.

According to ESPN’s Outside the Lines, Travis Henry is now up to 11 children by 10 different women, as a woman recently gave birth to twin girls.

The weekend ESPN program apparently has an investigative report on Henry’s current situation as he’s facing federal drug trafficking charges. It’s been unfortunate seeing how his NFL career has panned out.

Henry apparently is having trouble making child support payments, which amounts to $17K per month and is only going to increase with the recent additions.

Henry told ESPN, “I’ve lost everything in this mess I’ve gotten myself into.”

Travis Henry in jail

Travis Henry has had several off the field problems in his career. The first two to reveal themselves were money and women. Now facing federal drug charges, Henry could be doing some serious jail time. Henry only added to his long list of problems as he has been jailed on charges of contempt of court.

As his former teammates has said, the guy has a good heart, and I’d be inclined to agree with that having been around him for four seasons. I just think his biggest problem is he never thinks about consequences. And that has gotten him in trouble time and again. Not looking good for this guy.

Travis Henry plead not guilty in court Thursday at an arraignment hearing for the federal drug trafficking charges filed against him.

Henry faces anywhere from 10 years to life in prison and a $4 million fine. Sad story and despite Henry’s fortunate outcomes with the law and the league in the past (appealed an NFL violation of substance abuse charge and won last year) these are the Feds we’re talking about, and it sounds as if they’ve got him nailed.

Travis Henry has had his run-ins with the law before, but this time appears to be in some big time trouble. Though he’s currently out on bail for federal drug trafficking charges his former Bills teammates can’t believe his off the field problems have gone this far.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” said Lee Evans. “Travis is a good guy and you hate to see something like that happen to a good guy. It’s a tough situation and it’s hard for me to speak on because I don’t know the entire deal, but it’s an awful situation for him to be in. It’s unfortunate to see that happen to such a good player.”
