Marrone on Spiller availability Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on October 25, 2013 – 9:41 am

Bills head coach Doug Marrone made his weekly appearance on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550 and was asked about the availability of C.J. Spiller, who has yet to practice this week. Here’s what Marrone had to say.

“I think we’ve got to make a good decision,” said Marrone. “Player safety comes into it and the ability to put those players out on the field to be productive. As long as we have time to evaluate it we’re going to take as much time as we possibly can.”

The follow up question was Buffalo’s plan if Spiller doesn’t play.

“He is a dynamic player and he’s a part of an offense,” said Marrone. “Obviously we have Fred Jackson back there and Tashard Choice and we can make some moves and maybe bring Ronnie Wingo up as an option for us right now. There are a lot of things we can do. We have faith in the players that we have there.

“Obviously it does hurt with C.J. not being out there. He is truly a weapon. It is what it is. When he’s out there you want to make sure that he’s healthy. You don’t want to put him at risk.”

Bills liked QB Wilson in last year’s draft

Posted by Chris Brown on December 16, 2012 – 12:44 pm

The Bills spent an awful lot of time pre-draft with Seattle QB Russell Wilson. They thought of a lot of him as an NFL prospect and were not scared off by his lack of height.

In his weekly appearance on WGR Sportsradio 550, Nix said their draft philosophy doesn’t exclude players that lack ideal measurables, while also explaining why T.J. Graham was their third-round pick six picks before Seattle took Wilson.

“I firmly believe that winners come in all sizes,” said Nix. “I think Russell Wilson was one and we knew that. We spent a lot of time with Russell and he was on our radar, but we had one, we felt like we had to have a speed receiver. They took him in the third and that was a little high for us as far as our needs.

“You’ve got Doug Flutie. I was around Doug for eight or nine years and you’ve got Russell Wilson. Those guys are exceptional and you’ve got exceptions, but they’re winners. They know how to perform when the pressure is on and I’m not a bit surprised by what he’s done.”
