Dick Jauron finally had an opportunity to address the decision to add LB Teddy Lehman to the roster. The veteran free agent was signed last Friday, and as suspected it was an experience issue.
“Teddy Lehman is an experienced linebacker in our league and experienced in our system,” said Jauron who coached him with the Lions in 2004 and 2005. “It will help us because when you look at our linebacker group the three backups are not very experienced at all, so we thought it was a good opportunity to add somebody. We had a roster spot available and Teddy is a high quality guy. He’ll fit in with us and he’ll help us and definitely give us a little more comfort in terms of experience.”
Of course using Ashton Youboty’s open roster spot to add a linebacker leaves the team with just four cornerbacks. I asked coach Jauron if he’s comfortable with just four corners on his roster. Here’s his response.
“Yeah I do,” he said. “We’ll keep our eyes open.”
Obviously if Donte Whitner can return to action soon it would lessen the need to add a fifth cornerback because Whitner is versatile enough to help in a corner type role in the subpackages as he did as the team’s nickel back earlier this season.
But with Whitner’s health still a question mark and seven linebackers on the roster, one option if the right free agent cornerback was out there would be to waive one of your young linebackers and put him back on your practice squad (assuming he clears waivers) and then sign the cornerback of your choice.
