While the news that Whitner is back practicing is definitely good news, I have some reservations about him trying to come back so quickly from a severe shoulder separation.
The most significant of which is the guy that carries the ball for Cleveland and the kind of punishment he can dish out. Jamal Lewis pounded on the Bills defensive backs in that snow game last year including Whitner.
If the game plan has Whitner at free safety I’d feel a lot better about him playing so soon off the injury. With respect to the run front, I’d almost prefer Bryan Scott (a bigger safety) to be up in the box for this game to deal with Lewis and let Whitner run around and make plays on the back end.
Maybe on run downs you’ve got Scott in there and then on possible pass downs you bring Whitner in to handle Winslow.
But if they’ve got ideas about playing Whitner at SS full time that makes me real nervous for his long term availability the rest of the way. I know the Bills need this game badly, but they also need Whitner badly for those division games late in the season.
I know some of you are going to say you’ve got to have this game this week or those games in the season’s final month don’t matter, but I’d hate to see Whitner try to play, re-injure the thing in the first quarter and set back the clock another two weeks on his recovery.
Believe me I’m not going to be the one to doubt him if he says he’s ready to play. I just hope free safety is where he’s lined up on run downs.
