One way to have Donte Whitner in the lineup Monday night and take less of a risk with him re-injuring his shoulder is by using him only in the nickel package.
When opponents force defenses into their nickel personnel in most cases they’re going to throw the ball. If you use Whitner as the nickel corner on the slot receiver, it would reduce his chances of being a participant in the run front on run downs, while providing the Bills with a more experienced coverage option in the slot.
Having Whitner as an option to go against Kellen Winslow is important, and this may be a way to use him in a specialized role as opposed to a full time safety. Don’t know that it will happen, but it makes sense to me.
