For those that don’t remember, Bills former undrafted rookie free agent Martin Nance was a player that some, including myself, thought held a lot of promise. With a crowded receiving corps in Buffalo however, Nance didn’t even make the practice squad. Now a few years later he’s in Pittsburgh.
According to Steelers.com he’ll compete for the third receiver role left vacant by the departure of Nate Washington. In all likelihood Limas Sweed will get the nod, but it was interesting to see Nance, who spent 2008 on the Pittsburgh practice squad, resurface with the Steelers after some practice squad time in Minnesota.
The reason why was I spoke with Ben Roethlisberger about Nance a couple of years ago when the receiver was a rookie and with the Bills. Roethlisberger had played with Nance at Miami (OH) University for three years in college. And he raved about him saying he was bugging his personnel people in Pittsburgh to sign him.
Looks like he got his wish. Now we’ll see if Nance can make the most of the opportunity, since chances like that don’t grow on trees.
