Ryan Denney’s fake FG reception for a touchdown last week didn’t necessarily open the coaching staff’s eyes to the possibility of him playing tight end in a pinch, but he’s been getting some tight end reps after practice the past couple of days this week just in case.
“That’s a great thing for us,” said Dick Jauron. “As an emergency guy he’s a trustworthy and tough guy. Very athletic and he’s obviously shown he has very good hands. He likes to do it. Ryan is the kind of guy that will do anything for the team. He gives you a nice safety net.”
Denney has lined up at tight end before in his career with the Bills under former head coach Mike Mularkey.
“Back with coach Mularkey I ran some tight end a couple of games that year and I’ve played some goal line tight end,” said Denney.
Denney has prepared to play the position under Dick Jauron whenever the team has been short at the tight end position.
“It’s something I’ve done the last couple of years here when we’ve had a lot of tight end injuries,” he said. “Those can put you in a bind with the roster and trying to get guys in for one week. Even in Week 1 I was working on some run blocking and some pass routes. It’s mostly an emergency thing.”
With Shawn Nelson practicing fully on Thursday, its unlikely Denney will need to be pressed into action as the team should have three healthy tight ends this weekend.
