A lot of Bills fans were perplexed as to why Donte Whitner did not play Sunday despite being dressed for the game. Head coach Dick Jauron addressed the situation Monday.
“Donte knew he was going to dress and I told him we didn’t know if he would see action or not,” said Jauron. “He was up kind of as an emergency. I liked the way he had worked last week, but it was his first week back of work and I thought he was close to being ready and we would have used him if we had to in that game. We expect that he’ll just keep getting better this week in practice.”
Basically Whitner was dressed to play in an emergency situation, but was still not 100 percent recovered from the severe bone bruise on his ankle. He only practiced on a limited basis during the week leading up to the Tennessee game. It’s expected that Whitner will practice fully this week and return to the lineup, presumably at strong safety, with Jairus Byrd now entrenched at the free safety position.
