With the announcement earlier in the week out of Carolina that John Fox would be back for the 2010 season, all was thought to be peaches and cream for the Panthers head coach. But with a contract that only runs through 2010, Fox is somewhat of a lame duck without an extension and what he did not say Wednesday spoke volumes.
“I don’t get into that right now,” said Fox, who is 75-60 in Carolina with a Super Bowl appearance. “Our focus is to get through the season and I have an agent that deals with that.”
Rest assured minus a contract extension Fox might choose to keep his options open especially if there’s another team willing to give him a contract with far more job security. Of course that’s where things get tricky. If he’s under contract with Carolina he’s kind of stuck unless he resigns.
Then there’s likely to be compensation involved for the Panthers from any other club that might be interested in having him coach. Not an easy situation.
