Pro Football Talk is reporting that according to a source the Bills want to land an offensive-minded head coach.
While there’s no debating that Buffalo’s offense has been in worse shape than the defense the past five or six years, I don’t think Bills GM Buddy Nix works in absolutes like that. He told us here at Buffalobills.com what his primary qualities are for a head coach.
He said he wanted a good teacher and a good leader. He then went on to say the following.
“Another thing that is important, more so, sometimes than the head coach is the assistants, the coordinators,” said Nix. “If a head coach is a good CEO, then you have to have good coordinators and good offensive and defensive line coaches. You have to have a good quarterback coach, somebody that can get that guy better. You have to have a guy that can put a staff together.”
That doesn’t sound like Nix is committed to hiring only an offensive-minded coach. Provided any fit head coach can put a staff together that Nix feels good about, they’re probably going to get hired, no matter which side of the ball dominates their resume.
