Iowa tackle Bryan Bulaga is considered a virtual lock as a first round pick, but at this point in the draft process scouts and NFL GMs go over everything with a fine tooth comb and there’s one item they’ll be waiting on specifically for the former Hawkeye.
“Bulaga looks like he has short arms, but we haven’t measured him,” said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. “This week will be interesting to see whether or not (his arms are) 33 inches or more.”
This concern springs from the commonly held belief that for tackles longer arms are better. Longer arms enable tackles to more effectively steer pass rushers around the pocket and supposedly helps to keep defenders from getting into their chest.
I don’t see how it can be a make or break however, for a lineman as successful as Bulaga was, but measurables for some teams can affect player grades. We’ll try to get you the measurements if he’s made available to the media Thursday.
