The Patriots, with the loss of veteran Leigh Bodden to a season-ending injury in the preseason are starting a rookie (1st round pick) and 2nd year (former 2nd round pick) player at cornerback. Will the Bills be able to exploit that inexperience this week? Chan Gailey offered his take on the young Pats CBs.
“Most of the time they’re helping them out,” said Gailey of the approach the Patriots take defensively with Darius Butler and Devin McCourty. “They’re not leaving them on an island as much as they used to leave some of their other guys on an island. They’re breaking them in slowly, letting them learn the system and then I think as time goes on, they’re obviously good athletes and good players, they’ll probably put them on an island more and more.”
Gailey openly wonders if this is the week the Patriots try to see on a handful of plays if they can sink or swim on their own in the hopes that their pass rush can protect them on the front end instead of relying on safety help on the back end.
“It’ll be interesting to see how they play this week,” he said. “This may be the week they decide to do that. They haven’t thus far, but this may be the week.”
