Stevie Johnson’s 37-yard touchdown reception, which made it an eight-point game late, also had a creative touchdown celebration. Unfortunately for Johnson he also got docked 15 yards after officials deemd it excessive.
First of all I will say I applaud Stevie’s creativity. After scoring he found himself right next to the Patriots’ Minutemen, who line up along the end line in the back of the end zone and are dressed like the Minutemen of the Colonial days. After the Patriots score touchdowns they fire their rifles in formation.
Knowing they wouldn’t do that for his touchdown, Stevie simulated his own Minuteman celebration with a fake (air) rifle and even acted as if his fake rifle had a kick back. Really good stuff, except he got the flag for the celebration, which by the way was done by himself (not in a group setting).
And that led to him getting an earful from Chan Gailey on the sideline.
“It was pretty childish,” said Johnson. “It was stupid of me. I got caught up in the moment. I ended up costing the team some yards. They came through (for me) but at the same time I have to be smarter than that. Coach talked to me when I came off and said I got to be way smarter than that. The guys talked to me too. It was a nice play, no doubt about that but at the end of the play I cost us some yards.”
Suffice to say we won’t be seeing any more Stevie celebrations.
