Gailey on Fitz, protections

Bills head coach Chan Gailey commented after last Sunday’s game on how Ryan Fitzpatrick organizes the protections prior to the snap, getting his linemen, tight ends and backs lined up on the right people each play. It begged the question as to whether Gailey has always allowed his QB to set the protections or if Fitz was a special case.

“No, I’ve done that most everywhere,” said Gailey. “You have to be able to give the quarterback the license to get guys where they need to be. And there can only be one general. You can’t have a couple of people trying to do it.

“I know a couple of teams let the center do some of it, and we’ll let Geoff (Hangartner) direct sometimes, but it all falls back on Fitz to get people on who he feels he needs to get them on.”

Fitzpatrick did a masterful job of setting up the protections last week at Baltimore. We’ll see if he can do the same against Kansas City, which almost never blitzes and plays more vanilla.
