Come Wednesday Bills LB Shawne Merriman fully intends to be practicing with his new teammates.
“I’m pretty sure I’m practicing this week,” said Merriman. “I don’t know what the plan is later on in the week, but I’ll prepare like I’ll play.”
Merriman knows that it’s not his call as to whether the training or coaching staff believes he’s in proper football conditioning to play a game yet.
He’s said he feels good, but the final call as to how much, or more importantly how long he can help the Bills in a 60 minute game is up to the athletic trainers and Chan Gailey. Gailey has hinted at using him in spot duty, but we should no more based on his level of participation in practice Wednesday.
As for the reports that Merriman has no intention of considering staying in Buffalo after this season and even told his new teammates as much, the 3-time Pro Bowl LB refuted the report.
“Not at all,” he said. “You can ask every guy in this locker room and that’s not been the case. That’s not my focus. My focus is to come in and help the defense get better. Whatever capacity they want to use me I’m going to be here for that.”
