Buddy on Merriman pick up

Posted by Chris Brown on November 12, 2010 – 3:34 pm

Appearing on XX 1090 Sportsradio in San Diego this week, Bills GM Buddy Nix was naturally asked about the Bills’ addition of Shawne Merriman and commented on the team’s waiver claim for the first time.

Nix covered a variety of topics, but was asked extensively about Merriman.

“To me picking him up is a no brainer,” said Nix. “That’s one of the few ways you’ve got to get better during the season. Sometimes numbers get people and sometimes there are various reasons why guys are cut. For us having that priority, that 0-8 we earned. So having that priority if we wanted to pick a guy up, and having been around him for the first four or five years of his career and I know the kind of playmaker he can be.

“For us to have a chance to get a guy like that, that might be (a playmaker) we’ll see how it turns out. I don’t know how it’ll turn out, but we needed help and he can do it when he’s healthy.”

Nix was asked about the reports and speculation that Merriman did not want to be claimed by the Bills, but Nix wisely pointed out that if that was the case, he likely would not have reported in the first place.

“We didn’t ask him,” said Nix. “Our right was to pick him up on waivers and that’s what we did. Then the next move is his and if he didn’t want to come that was his business. Our business is to do what’s best for the Bills and that’s why we did it.

“To me it’s very simple. Picking him up on waivers, claiming him was our choice. How he responds is his (choice). I will say this to you. Since he’s been here he has done nothing but over work. You have to pull him back every day. How long that will last? That’s up to him. If it works out fine, but if it doesn’t then we tried to improve our team.”

With respect to Merriman’s injury Nix said getting him healthy is priority number one despite the fact that the team is in need of pass rush help.

“He strained that Achilles and it’s a situation where we’re determined not to put him back on the field until he’s healthy,” Nix said. “If that takes a week or if that takes four weeks that’s what we’re going to do.”
