Everyone is more than ready to hang on every word uttered by Cam Newton this week when he addresses the media at the NFL combine and teams will be doing the same in personal interviews behind closed doors. So SI.com’s Peter King wisely floated out this zinger after getting a phone interview with him Tuesday.
SI_PeterKing Newton: “I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon.” Ron Rivera, Chan Gailey, John Harbaugh blanch.
Now everyone and their brother has an opinion on what this statement means. Does it mean he thinks he’s already a star? Is he just confident in his abilities? Or is it a statement about his work ethic?
I think all of it is pure supposition at this point, and only the teams that get Newton behind closed doors will get a true sense about his personality and character traits.
