Oregon State DT Stephen Paea couldn’t quite lock out rep number 50 on the bench press, but his 49 reps set an NFL combine record breaking the old mark set by Arkansas C Mitch Petrus (2010), Ohio State’s Mike Kudla (2006) and UTEP and former Bills DL Leif Larsen (2000) who all had 45 reps.
“I was kind of mad at myself,” said Paea. “I was off counting. I couldn’t tell if I was at 45 or 46. My goal was to get 45 and stop and pump out at least five or seven (more).”
Paea said in training his best was 48, which he did last Monday. A squatty 6’1″ Paea is shaped like an ice box as the native Tongan is a run stuffing machine. He’s forecast as a late first or early second round pick.
