There are naturally a lot of opinions amongst Bills fans as to what positions the team should address in free agency. A popular one outside the walls of One Bills Drive has been offensive tackle. Bills GM Buddy Nix was asked for his thoughts on adding a veteran tackle in free agency.
“You know, if a guy comes available that we think can upgrade us, we’ll do it,” he said. “I think that the offensive line has been beat to death. Somebody writes that we need this or somebody says it, and then it goes around, we’ll see. We think we’ve got better players than you guys and maybe the fans think we have.”
The coaching staff has made no secret last year about how impressed they were with Erik Pears when he came in late last season and picked things up quickly. Knowing he had bounced around with a couple of clubs last year they believe his strength and conditioning had suffered. They believe with a full training camp and proper conditioning and training with just one team he could be a viable starting option at offensive tackle. The former two-year starter for the Broncos was at One Bills Drive on Tuesday.
Incumbent left tackle Demetrius Bell got better as the season wore on last year as he got back to full health off microfracture surgery. Now with a full offseason to train for football rather than straight rehab will make him a better player in 2011 as well.
