NFL clubs will be able to clip players from their roster starting Thursday at 4:01 pm ET, as teams at or near the salary cap ($120.3M) release players to create more room to sign draft choices, undrafted rookies or other veteran free agents. Bills GM Buddy Nix intends to pay close attention to what players shake loose.
“There are guys that will become available,” said Nix. “There will be waivers starting Thursday, guys cutting people. We always look to upgrade.”
Here’s just a handful of the players that have reportedly been informed that they’ll be released by their current clubs.
LB Nick Barnett – Green Bay
QB Jake Delhomme – Cleveland
RB Willis McGahee – Baltimore
WR Derrick Mason – Baltimore
DT Kelly Gregg – Baltimore
TE Todd Heap – Baltimore
DE Jason Taylor – NY Jets
DT Rocky Bernard – NY Giants
WR Antwaan Randle-El – Pittsburgh
OT Max Starks – Pittsburgh
DE Phillip Daniels – Washington
C Casey Rabach – Washington
TE Donald Lee – Green Bay
DT Ma’ake Kemoeatu – Washington
The list of waived players won’t be star-studded top to bottom, but there will be some quality names sitting out there.
In some cases the NFL teams will try to re-sign some of their waived vets to lesser contracts, but once they’re released any NFL team is free to negotiate with them as a free agent.
