On how the Bills contain the Patriots:
You know they’re going to make their yards. You’re trying to make sure you don’t give up the big play. You’re trying to make sure you’re playing great red zone defense. Those kinds of things. If you don’t let the big play out and you make them go down the field methodically, you give yourself a better chance of stopping them and that’s what you have to do. You have to try to make sure you limit the run game and make sure you don’t give up the big plays. You tackle the ball. And if you get enough hats to the ball maybe you knock one free. Those kinds of things. You just make them earn it all the way down the field.
On if last year’s game in December against the Patriots sticks with him at all:
Sure it does. You don’t want to play like that. You hate it when you play like that. We came in and Fitz got hurt fairly early and we sputtered the first two drives. You can’t do that. It’s in the back of your mind but that has zero relevance to this game.
On the Patriots showing less 3-4 defense this year:
They’re a four-man front now. They line up in 3-4 spacing from time to time but they’re really a four-man front now. They’re big and strong inside. They’ve got some good edge pass rush. They’ve made the change and it was an easy change for them to make. Many people play open sets now. You had to go to more four-man front or nickel situations so they said why not teach that all the time rather than just in nickel situations.
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
On being in the national spotlight this week:
I don’t really care. I think that my mom cares. I guess all that stuff comes with success. On one hand it’s something that you can’t let it be a distraction. On the other hand it’s good for guys on our team to get the recognition, to get some respect around the league. It’s something that, it’s probably not my favorite thing in the world to do but it’s obviously something that I have to do:
On keeping up with the play and they do will start making names for themselves:
That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make a name for ourselves. We’re trying to make a name for our offense. We’re trying to make a name for our team. The only way you get respect in this league is to go out there and play. We’re trying to earn everybody’s respect by our play on the field.
On the 15-game losing streak to the Patriots:
There haven’t been many guys that were here for a majority of those games. It is something though. I guess it’s significant in that we haven’t beaten them in a long time. I’ve been here going on my third year and we haven’t beat them yet. It’s important. They’re a division rival. I don’t know if it makes it any more important. They’ve been the team that’s been at the top of our division for a long time. For us to get there we have to beat them. For us, it’s going into this game with confidence, kind of carrying what we’ve done, carrying the momentum that we have from the first two games and going out there and executing and playing like it was any other game.
RB Fred Jackson
On measuring up to New England:
We know (New England) is a great team. We feel like we’re a great team, too. It will be a good game for us, a good test and a measuring stick for us. They get to come into our spot, get the fans rowdy and see what we can do from there.
On what they have to do to beat New England:
We’ll definitely have to make some plays, including myself have to make some big runs. Hopefully we continue as a team to play well. The offensive line is looking forward to the challenge of blocking (New England’s defensive line). I look forward to facing them. Hopefully we can go out there as a team and make some plays.
NT Kyle Williams
On the losing streak to New England:
Obviously you play the game to win. You come out here and you work, you practice, you lift weights in the off season to win. It’s not fun losing to anybody. But on the 15 game streak I don’t care anything about that. Obviously it’s a new year and a new team. I actually think Brady said it best the other day addressing the whole thing between (Chad) Ochocinco and (Tedy) Bruschi. They’re a new team. Every year there is a new reason for hope and excitement. I think we’re going to go out there and get to work today. No matter how it goes down we’re going to give them hell.
LB Shawne Merriman
On Patriots QB Tom Brady getting the ball out quick:
Somebody as good as Tom you just have to make them uncomfortable. That’s just what you have to do and he can throw the ball quick. It’s something we all have seen on film and they are extremely good at. One of the things we have to try to do is go out and put them in a situation where they can’t deliver things on time. And that’s why they’re so good.
On making impact plays:
Yeah that’s still going to come. Sometimes people forget that you can only be impactful on plays that allow you to be impactful. You know to go out and play what you get. Whenever you’re seeing the number one and two rushing offense in the league it makes you a little wary about what they can do in the run game. This week they’re still good in the run but they weren’t one and two like Oakland and KC was.
