Earlier this week Bills head coach Chan Gailey indicated that it’s unlikely that Shawne Merriman would play 65 or 70 snaps a game on defense. Being two years removed from regular season football, the team is still easing him into a heavier workload. However, Gailey made it clear that they don’t have him assigned to a specific play count prior to a game.
“There isn’t a play count,” Gailey told Buffalobills.com. “It’s a feel thing. If we think that he’s starting to get tired or he feels a little fatigued we’ll give him a few plays off. We want him out there as much as he can be out there, don’t get me wrong. But we’re trying to be smart about having him the entire year and not just beating him down here early in the season until he gets back into the swing of playing football.”
