BDC 9/29: Fitz named Player of the Month and more

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on September 29, 2011 – 8:36 am

DAILY REPORT

— Today the NFL will announce that Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. Fitzpatrick led Bills to a 3-0 start and the distinction of being the only undefeated team in the AFC.  He led the team to consecutive come-from-behind victories in each of the last two weeks.  Buffalo is the first team in NFL history to win consecutive games in which it trailed by at least 18 points in each contest. Fitzpatrick ranks second in the AFC in TD passes with nine and a passer rating of 103.5.  He has completed 72 of 111 passes for 841 yards with three interceptions.  He has led an offense which is tied for the conference lead with 11 red zone TDs.  Buffalo’s 78.6 red zone TD % ranks second in the AFC.

“I think it is a tremendous honor,” Fitzpatrick said.  “It really shows how well our offense has played.  Whenever you receive an award like that it’s not just because of one guy, it reflects on the whole team.  I think we’ve done a good job and I am looking forward to keeping it going.”

Fitzpatrick becomes the first Bill to receive AFC Offensive Player of the Month honors since Drew Bledsoe in September 2002. He is the third Bills quarterback to receive the honor and this is the fourth occasion – all of which have occurred in the month of September.

NOTABLE QUOTES FROM MEDIA DAY
Head Coach Chan Gailey
On how he explains the sudden jump in offensive scoring ability and points:
There are so many things that go into it.  You can’t say it’s this or that and then it’s done.  If it had just been two things we would have tried to have done a better job at solving it last year.  But it’s a combination of Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) and our offensive staff being closer in tune with what we’re trying to get done, knowing what we can do on offense and knowing what our capabilities are from our players.  Our offensive line is protecting so much better.  It allows Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) to stand back there and see what he needs to see.  He’s (Ryan Fitzpatrick) got a better feel for the game than he did last year.  I just think we’re better overall.  I don’t know if we’ll set records this year going on into it, but it’d be nice if we did.  We’ve faced some defenses that have given us some things to take advantage of.

On the Bengals defense and their young front:
They’re not number three in the league for nothing.  They’re good.  I mean they get after it.  They’re front four are playing extrememly well.  Linebackers are active.  They give you a lot of different looks.  They create problems for you.  They’ve earned being the third best defense in the league.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
On Sunday being a potential trap game:
We started out 0-8 last year, we only won four games and we know how hard wins are to come by. I think with that I don’t think you’ll ever see us take a game for granted.  For us we’ve got a huge challenge this week in this being the third ranked defense in the NFL.  The pressure they create on the quarterback, the talent they have on the back end.  This is probably our biggest challenge yet in terms of our offense going against a defense.  We’re looking forward to it.

RB Fred Jackson
On protecting against Cincinnati’s pass rush:
Their front four is one of the best front fours we’ll see rushing the quarterback.  It’ll be a good test for our line and they’re excited about it, the challenge.  I’ll be back there helping when I can though, so hopefully we can keep Fitz upright and he’ll make some plays for us.  We know it’s a big challenge though.

On the win against Cincinnati last year:
It let us know that we we’re capable of doing.  That’s obviously not the way we want to start a football game. The plan is not to go out and get down like that.  We’ll prepare for them. They’re a good team and we know that we’re going into their house where it’ll be hostile. They’ll be amped for the game, so we have to come out and match it.

NT Kyle Williams
On generating a pass rush:
I think you’re always concerned. We want to hit the guy and we want to disrupt the guy more.  I think some of it is you have to look at what we are doing defensively and you have to look at what they’re doing offensively.  I’m not making excuses or anything like that, but the guy we just played (Tom Brady) he gets rid of the ball.  If you look at the game he’s hitting a lot of crossing routes and different things like that.  So, it’s a little bit above but it’s something we want to get more out of as we have opportunities to do it.  When guys get one-on-one you have to win. You have to get pressure, hit the quarterback and disrupt his lanes.

On playing a lot of nickel defense last week:
Yeah, we rushed three and four a lot.  The big emphasis is those guys, the center, they like to turn the protection. They like to knock a defensive tackle too far over on the outside and let Brady set up and have a clean lane to throw in.  That’s something we tried to do was to clog up the lanes up the middle so he couldn’t get those free throws and step up and throw the ball down the field.
