The reports continue to fly about what team is the favorite to land a prized free agent. The latest comes out of Chicago reporting the Bears to be the frontrunner to land top pass rushing free agent DE Mario Wililams.
The Comcast Sportsnet report cites a “number of NFL sources” saying that Chicago is the favorite to land him, but I just don’t see it. Just two years ago they signed Julius Peppers to a $91M dollar deal with $42M guaranteed. How in the world are they going to pay Mario Williams $15M per season to play at the same position?
With the salary cap expected to stay relatively flat in the early going of this new CBA the Bears would cripple their team at other positions if they’re doling out $28M a year to two defensive ends. I just don’t see the logic there.
