BDC 8/31: Bills at Lions Recap

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on August 31, 2012 – 11:24 am

–The Buffalo Bills traveled to Ford Field and were defeated by the Detroit Lions 38-32 on Thursday night. The loss ended a streak of nine straight preseasons that Buffalo had notched a victory. The Bills’ first team offense opened the game by relying on RB C.J. Spiller, who had six carries for 29 yards, to move the ball down the field before QB Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with WR Stevie Johnson for a four yard touchdown grab to put the Bills on top 7-0 less than four minutes into the game.  The Bills managed to rebound from a 21-point first quarter deficit to regain the lead in the fourth quarter at 32-31, but Lions rookie QB Kellen Moore responded by orchestrating a 80-yard game winning touchdown drive. For Buffalo, Fitzpatrick finished 5-of-5 for 39 yards and a TD; raising his final preseason numbers to 26-for-48 for 247 yards and two TDs. Johnson tallied two catches for 17 yards and a TD on the night; raising his preseason totals to 8 catches for 81 yards and a score.

Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
On the competition at wide receiver:
“I was really happy to see Marcus (Easley) run that kickoff back. That was great. To be able to have a second chance there after their penalty and he just ran by everybody there. It was really good to see. You know, he’s had a lot of things that haven’t gone his way the last few years with injuries and to see him make that play and to be running and looking mighty fast, that was good. But those guys did a good job. There are a lot of different quarterbacks that have been in there that they’ve been working with but I thought they made some good plays today.”

Bills WR Stevie Johnson had a 4-yard touchdown pass from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick on the opening drive of last night’s game.

Bills QB Tyler Thigpen went 18-for-30 attempts in last night’s preseason finale vs. the Lions for 186 yards, one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Bills RB C.J. Spiller ran the ball for 29-yards on six carries during the first team’s offensive drive to help move the ball down the field that led to a touchdown.

Bills WR Marcus Easley had one catch for 20-yards last night and returned a 100-yard kickoff return late in the fourth quarter to give the Bills within one point. The Bills went for a two-point conversion and Easley caught a pass from QB Thigpen and broke the plane to give the Bills their first lead since the first quarter of the game.
