Spiller’s transition

When asked this week why T.J. Graham wasn’t ready to suit up in Week 1 as a rookie, head coach Chan Gailey referenced how C.J. Spiller was in a similar boat as a rookie. He wasn’t ready to handle all the responsibilities of an every down back. Now in his third NFL season Spiller has developed into an every down player, but he hasn’t forgotten where he came from to where he is now.

“Just like a newborn baby,” said Spiller when asked how he felt as a rookie. “Coming into the NFL of course, you have a top 10 pick there are high expectations. I have high expectations every year I play the game. I was still trying to learn and figure things out. Trying to get a feel for how teams are going to play me. Once I got used to it I thought I got better. And I am still learning. You can never get complacent or say you just arrived and know everything. Every day I am trying to learn something new and figure out how I can better myself as a player and as a person. That is the beauty of playing the game.”

In addition to confidence, one other area where Gailey believes Spiller has made the biggest strides is in pass protection and blitz pick up.
