BDC 1/13: Reed Among HOF Finalists

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on January 11, 2013 – 11:40 am

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced today that former Bills WR Andre Reed has been selected as one of the 15 modern-era finalists who will be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the Hall’s Selection Committee meets in New Orleans on Saturday, February 2nd. To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80-percent. Reed was selected as the 86th player overall by the Bills in the 1985 NFL Draft. He had 941 career receptions as a Bill which still stands as a record on the Bills list along with 13,095 career reception yards and 36 games with 100-plus receiving yards and 15 catches in a game.

–The Buffalo Bills announced yesterday that Mike Pettine (pronounced PET-in) has been hired as the team’s defensive coordinator. Pettine will enter his 12th year in the NFL coaching ranks in 2013 and fifth as a defensive coordinator. He served in the same capacity with the New York Jets from 2009-12 overseeing a defense that finished in the top 10 in total defense each year. Pettine’s 2012 defense limited their opponents to the second-fewest passing yards per game (189.8) and finished fifth in the AFC in total defense (323.4 total yards per game).

–The Buffalo Bills also announced yesterday that Nathaniel Hackett has been hired as the team’s offensive coordinator. Hackett re-joins the Bills’ coaching staff after spending the previous three years at Syracuse working with head coach Doug Marrone. He was the Orange’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/tight ends coach from 2011-12 after one season as the school’s quarterbacks/passing game/tight ends coach. The Orange offense set multiple school records in 2012 including yards per game (476.0), passing yards (3,757), touchdown passes (26), completions (295) and first downs (328). In 2012, Syracuse’s offense featured a 3,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher and 1,000 yard receiver for the first time in a single-season in school history while generating 500 yards of offense or better in seven games.

–Bills CB/punt returner Leodis McKelvin was selected as the punt returner for Pro Football Weekly’s All-NFL Team.

“The speedy former first-rounder blossomed into an electric punt returner with a league-high 18.7-yard punt-return average and two TDs.” – Pro Football Weekly on McKlevin.

Q: What makes you think things will be different for the Bills under Doug Marrone?
A: “I think Doug Marrone has been amazing to work for. What he did, and I was lucky to be part of it, but what he did at Syracuse from entering into a team that was 116th out of however many there are (in the NCAA). The first year I was there to actually go to a bowl game and win a bowl game that was amazing. The way he instills the ability to win. The confidence in players when they did not know if they had it and he was able to put that into them to make them feel powerful and feel confident. I think that is what he does the best. That is why he is here and that is why he has been successful.”

Former Bills WR Andre Reed is one of 15 modern-era finalists to be considered for election in the 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
