Combine QB contingent smaller this year

As we mentioned last week when the invite list was released there will be 16 quarterbacks at this year’s NFL Combine, but that’s down from previous years.

Last year’s heralded 2012 class had 19 invitees. In 2011 there were 18. In 2010, 19 and in 2009 there were 21.

While it’s not an indication that the quarterback class this year is thin, many will perceive it that way especially in the wake of last year’s successful quarterback draft class.

Here’s a look at how many quarterbacks were actually drafted each of the last four years compared to the Combine invites that same year.

2009 – Combine QB invites – 21, QBs drafted – 10
2010 – Combine QB invites – 18, QBs drafted – 14
2011 – Combine QB invites – 18, QBs drafted – 12
2012 – Combine QB invites – 19, QBs drafted – 11
2013 – Combine QB invites – 16, QBs drafted – ??

So even though there were 21 Combine invites in 2009, it is also the year in which the fewest quarterbacks were drafted over the past four years. And even though last year’s quarterback class was widely considered to be the best since the gold standard QB draft of 1983, only 11 were taken.
