Inside The Bills

A players-eye view of free agency

We are days away from the start of NFL free agency, and there are hundreds of internet experts offering their opinions on which teams need which players.  But that’s only one side of the equation.

NFL players have a say in where they go once they qualify for free agency.  And there may not be enough attention paid to their decision-making once the market opens.

Former Bills LB Kawika Mitchell shed some light on the process Wednesday night, during an appearance on The John Murphy Show.  Mitchell signed with the Bills early in the free agent period in 2008 and played two seasons for the team.

Now retired and living in Orlando, Florida, Mitchell says the Bills reached out to him as soon as free agency opened five years ago, and he quickly made a visit to Buffalo.  The centerpiece of his visit was a sitdown session with the coaching staff.

“It was mostly football,” Mitchell told host John Murphy.  “It was kinda cold, in the middle of March.  That was a little bit of a surprise to me.  But the overall visit, talking to the coaches going over things– that was impressive.  And then going out to eat and seeing the city, some of the things going on.  I’m a pretty simple man.  They showed me everything they had, and they impressed me right from the beginning.”

Mitchell said the Bills approach worked for him.  And he offered some insight into how NFL free agents should approach the process next week.

“At the bottom line, you really have to consider the team, you have to consider your position, you have to consider your financial security that the team is offering,” he said.

But Mitchell also said the interest and the passion among Bills followers was a consideration for him, when he made his decision to sign with the team.

“The one thing I loved about Buffalo was just the passion the fans have.  You can feel the tradition.  I definitely wanted to be part of turning the team around and winning more games than they have in the past.  I wanted to be a part of that.   Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done the way we wanted to, but that was definitely a driving force that led me to choose Buffalo.”
