Why team workouts are critical to the Bills

In today’s NFL, woe to the player who takes more than a month or so off once the season ends and the offseason begins. Most current NFL players are back in the gym, and on the track, by early February if their season ends after 16-games.

But new Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone says team workouts, like the Voluntary Offseason Conditioning program the Bills began this week, are a critical part of team building. Marrone made the comments Thursday night in an appearance on The John Murphy Show.

“It’s human nature,” Marrone said. “When you’re training as a team, you’re able to push yourself a little bit more. And I’m not saying that to people who train on their own, that they can’t get a lot accomplished, they can. But I think when you’re together as a team, it gets into team building.”

Marrone says having his veterans at One Bills Drive this week, working out as a group in the weight room and on the practice field, goes a long way towards team building.

“What is team building?,” he asked. “Some people think it means take the team on a picnic or to go play paintball-those type of activities. But for me, team building is when I’m out there running or I’m lifting, and I’m struggling to get that last rep—I’m tired and I don’t want to run that extra sprint, and I look over there and there’s someone next to me, and he says, ‘C’mon, let’s go, we have to go. You can count on me to do it.’”

“I really think at the end of the day when you’re in the locker room, and you’re looking around and everyone’s tired, I think of that as more team building.”
