NFL Net’s Heath Evans-“Tie goes to EJ”

When the national NFL writers and reporters visit Bills camp this summer, the number one story line will be the quarterback battle between veteran Kevin Kolb and rookie EJ Manuel.

And for one NFL Network analyst, if the race is close, the rookie should get the edge.

Former Dolphins, Patriots and Saints Fullback Heath Evans was at Bills camp this week watching the team work out. He appeared on The John Murphy Show Tuesday night, to talk about the quarterback battle.

“What I saw today was that if the race is even, the tie goes to EJ,” Evans said on the radio show. “They (the Bills) make moves to get this kid, and they kind of surprised the world that this was the one that they wanted in the first round. We’ll see what they’ll do, but if I was picking a week one starter today, both here and with the Jets, I’m taking the rookies.”

Evans visited the Jets camp Monday, the day before he saw the Bills, and came away impressed with New York rookie QB Geno Smith. But he likes Manuel a lot. Host John Murphy asked Evans if the Bills might be asking too much of Manuel, to take over the quarterback reins right away.

“I don’t think so,” Evans replied. “Drive down I-95 and see Miami, and what Ryan Tannehill was able to do last year in this division. You want to see more touchdowns from Ryan and maybe a few less interceptions, but that was a quarterback with far less college experience playing quarterback (than Manuel) and yet was able to walk into this division and play some really good football.”
