The preseason is over as far as on-field work for Bills rookie QB EJ Manuel. But the first round draft pick still has plenty of work to do.
Head Coach Doug Marrone says he and his staff will work extensively with Manuel over the next two weeks, while he recovers from a minor procedure on his injured knee.
Appearing on The John Murphy Show Wednesday night, Marrone says the coaching staff will step up the classroom work for EJ in the weeks ahead.
“Now, we’re going to train him in a different way,” Marrone said. “More of the mental reps. More of getting in, trying to break down film with our quality control guys and really catch him up on that. And really try to advance that part of his development.”
Marrone told host John Murphy he has spoken to the first round draft pick about maintaining his focus on football during his rehab period.
“I told him, you have to be smart about it. Initially, you have this down time after the procedure, which is a short down time. And you’re on the phone quite a bit, talking to everyone. And I told him, what you’re doing is, you’re putting yourself in a bad situation where you’re conditioning other people to talk to you at this time, which you’re not going to have during the year. You’re taking up your time to do that, and then you’re going to have to transition back to a working type atmosphere. I said, we don’t want to go that route.”
