BDC 9/30: Bills Defeat Ravens; Improve to 2-2

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on September 30, 2013 – 11:32 am

— The Buffalo Bills defeated the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 to earn their second victory of the season in front of a sold-out crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills picked off Baltimore QB Joe Flacco five times to take control of the game. The story offensively was the running game, as the Bills piled up 203 yards on the ground for the day. RB Fred Jackson had 87 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, and he moved in to third place on the Bills All-Time rushing list. RB C.J. Spiller chipped in 77 yards on 23 attempts. QB EJ Manuel threw for 167 yards and a touchdown and now has the third highest touchdown total for a Bills rookie quarterback with five on the season. The touchdown was a rookie-to-rookie connection on a 42-yard bomb to WR Robert Woods. Leading the defensive effort were MLB Kiko Alonso and DB Aaron Williams. Alonso had five tackles and two interceptions including the game clincher at the Bills 36 yard line with 57 seconds left in the game. Alonso became the first Bills rookie linebacker to record an interception in three consecutive games. Williams had two tackles and two interceptions as well, including a lunging grab in the end zone. He also had four pass breakups on the day while playing out of position at cornerback. Leading the way for the Ravens offense were Flacco and WR Torrey Smith. Flacco finished the day throwing for 347 yards and two touchdowns. Smith added 166 yards on five catches and a touchdown.

Bills rookie LB Kiko Alonso recorded two interceptions, including one on the Ravens’ final offensive possession to seal a Buffalo victory. Alonso, who has recorded five takeaways this season (four INTs & one FR), became the first Bills rookie with a multiple interception game since Jairus Byrd tallied two picks versus Houston in 2009.

RB Fred Jackson moved up in franchise ranks yesterday by recording a game-high 87 yards on 16 carries and a score to pass RB Joe Cribbs for third place on the team’s all-time rushing list. Jackson has now ran for 4,487 yards since joining the Bills in 2007.

DT Marcell Dareus notched two sacks Sunday to raise his season total to 3.0. The performance marked Dareus’ third career multi-sack game (2.5 vs. Wash, 10/20/11; 2.0 at Mia, 12/16/12).

DOUG MARRONE, Buffalo Bills Head Coach
On where the team is at after four games:
“I’m proud of this team, here we are after the first quarter and we’re 2-2. We’ve had a lot of adversity throughout every part of the program. Whether it be injuries, whether it be schematics, the coaching, trying to get people in the right spot. The player’s communication is a big challenge. We’re playing with a lot of players that haven’t been together for a long period of time. I give a lot of credit to the players and I give a lot of credit to the coaches. To come through this first quarter and be 2-2, that’s who we are, let’s get ready to get this fourth quarter and I believe we’ll start getting some of the players back and we’re looking forward to that and we’re excited about it.”

ROBERT WOODS, Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver
Can you talk about the chemistry that continues to come on between EJ Manuel and you?
“Coming in as rookies we’re just trying to get better and develop and grow each game, each game is a learning experience for the both of us. He’s developing, he’s pulling wins for his offenses, and not looking at him as a rookie, but as this teams’ quarterback and a leader.”
