BDC 10/4: Bills Defeated By Browns

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on October 4, 2013 – 3:13 pm

The Buffalo Bills were defeated by the Cleveland Browns 37-24 in Thursday night at First Energy Stadium. The Bills fall to 2-3 on the season with the loss. QB EJ Manuel threw for 129 yards and rushed for 14 before sustaining a knee injury. QB Jeff Tuel stepped in for him and threw for 80 yards. The offense was led by the ground game, as all three touchdowns came via the rushing attack. RB Fred Jackson ran for 53 yards and two touchdowns, while RB C.J. Spiller ran for 64 yards and a touchdown. For Jackson, the touchdowns tied a career-high for rushing touchdowns in a game. He now has 23 touchdowns and is tied for ninth place on the Bills all-time rushing touchdown list with Jim Braxton. On the defensive side, LB Kiko Alonso, DT Kyle Williams and DE Mario Williams continued their strong play. Alonso led the team with 12 tackles on the night. Kyle Williams had eight tackles and a sack. Mario Williams had two sacks on the night, which raises his season total to 7.5. K Dan Carpenter converted his lone field goal attempt of the day from 52 yards out. Leading the way for the Browns was QB Brandon Weeden who stepped in for QB Brian Hoyer after he suffered a knee injury in the first quarter. Weeden threw for 197 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown went to WR Josh Gordon who had 4 catches for 86 yards. The Browns also took advantage of touchdowns from their defense and their special teams. S TJ Ward returned a Jeff Tuel pass 44 yards for a touchdown and PR Travis Benjamin had a 79 yard punt return for a touchdown.

— The NFL announced yesterday that LB Kiko Alonso has been named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month. Alonso finished September with 32 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and four interceptions. Alonso is the sixth Bills player to be named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month and is the first Bill to win the award since Jairus Byrd in 2009 (October).

The Bills rushing attack, led by RB C.J. Spiller and RB Fred Jackson, totaled 155 yards and three scores last night in the Bills 37-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Spiller led the Bills with 66 yards on the ground and accounted for one of the TDs, when he broke a 54 yard scoring scamper to start the third quarter. Jackson tallied the other two scores for the Bills—his fourth career multi-score game.|

DE Mario Williams recorded two sacks last night, moving his season sack total to 7.5 which is tied for the NFL lead and marking his 19th career multi-sack performance.

DOUG MARRONE, Buffalo Bills Head Coach
On the job that C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson did to bounce back from injuries on a short week:
“I thought they did a great job. Both players did a lot of extra treatment. We really didn’t know. I told you guys before it was going to be a day-to-day thing, but it just started getting better and better and both players were coming in every day saying, ‘I feel good. I think I’m going to be ready. I think I’m going to be ready.’ Fred was a little bit earlier in his decision to play and then C.J. felt good and helped us tonight. He had that big run.”
