Bills CB Brandon Smith was called up from the practice squad, while CB Johnny Adams was released and subsequently signed back to the team’s practice squad Wednesday. As head coach Doug Marrone explains the Smith promotion was to take a better look at just what kind of ability he has to offer.
At 6’2″ and 204 pounds, Smith brings size and length to the position, something that Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine covet in their cover men. Smith however, is new to the position being a converted wide receiver. Still, Marrone wants to know what Smith can offer the team now rather than wondering about his talents when the season is over.
“A lot of these guys that we’ve acquired whether we acquired them late we want to see what they can do,” said Marrone. “We obviously like their skill sets so we’re going to try to bring them up and put them out there. I think the worst mistake you can make as a coach is to have people on your roster and at the end of the day not knowing. At the end of the year you’re like, ’Well I don’t really know, let’s keep him around for another year.’ Let’s go out there. This is about playing and being productive and winning and let’s see if they can go out there and do it.”
