BDC 10/14: Bills Defeated by Bengals in OT

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on October 14, 2013 – 11:35 am

— The Buffalo Bills were defeated by the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 in overtime on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss. QB Thad Lewis threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 17 yards and his first career rushing touchdown in only his second career start and first with the Bills. The recipients of the touchdowns were TE Scott Chandler who finished with 4 catches and 47 yards and WR Marquise Goodwin who finished with three catches for 51 yards. The touchdown connection between Goodwin and Lewis was from 40 yards out to send the game in to overtime. On the defensive side, LB Kiko Alonso and S Da’Norris Searcy turned in big performances. Alonso led the team with a career-high 22 tackles on the day and now leads the NFL with 66 tackles for the season. Searcy had a career-high 16 tackles, including three for a loss and his second sack of the season. S Jim Leonhard also chipped in with his third interception on the season. K Dan Carpenter converted his lone field goal attempt of the day from 51 yards out. He is the first Bills kicker with 50-yard FGs in consecutive games since Mike Hollis in 2002. Leading the way for the Bengals offensively was QB Andy Dalton and WR A.J. Green. Dalton threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns on the day as the Bengals utilized screen passes and swing plays to get big chunks of yardage. Green had six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. K Mike Nugent went 2-for-3 for the day for the Bengals and made up for his earlier miss from 34 yards out when he split the uprights from 43 yards in overtime to get the Bengals the win.

WR Marquise Goodwin returned to the lineup yesterday after missing the team’s first five games due to injury and made his presence felt, tallying the game-tying touchdown on a 40-yard pass from QB Thad Lewis with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter to push the game into overtime.

QB Thad Lewis made his first career start as a Bill, completing 19-of-32 pass attempts for 216 yards and two scores to go along with a rushing TD—making Lewis the first QB in team history to notch two passing TDs and a rushing score in his first career start with the team.

LB Kiko Alonso tallied 22 tackles yesterday against the Bengals. Alonso’s 22 tackles are the most by a Bill since LB Damien Covington recorded 22 tackles in a 1997 contest versus Denver.

DOUG MARRONE Buffalo Bills Head Coach
Q: Overall offensively you put points on a team that shut down New England. Would you agree you did well?
A: It’s hard to stand up here and try to talk about a positive because at the end of the game you win and that’s what you want to do you want to be able to win. To say that we did some things well managing the third down. I would say yes, we did some things that are encouraging, but at the same time we didn’t do enough things to win the game. There are some encouraging signs there.

Q: You get the big play to Scott Chandler and then run up to the line no huddle and go deep to Marquise Goodwin. Did you catch them off guard?
A: No, I don’t think we did. I think they were ready for it. I think what happened was they came back and we had really good protection, Chandler did a nice job of getting open, Thad found him. Then on the next play when we went they went cover one and when they went cover one we thought we had a good matchup with Marquise, that’s how that went. As soon as we saw they went cover one we were hoping that he would throw it to him and he did for the touchdown.
