Throwback Thursday: T.J. Graham’s early years

Not all NFL players were the top talent on their little league football teams growing up. In fact, T.J. Graham learned the hard way that his rise to the top wouldn’t be so easy.

“It’s kind of funny because when I first started playing,” Graham said, “I got hit and I got the wind knocked out of me, and I cried and ran up to my mom, and my mom yelled at me and told me to get back on the field. So even to this day if something is wrong, I won’t go to my mom. I just deal with it myself.”

When he was a sophomore in high school in Raleigh, North Carolina, he realized he could be a special athlete as he started really growing.

“I was really short and really skinny and wasn’t very fast. I was just quick,” he said of his early years. “I started getting stronger and a lot faster and a lot bigger.

He also played baseball, basketball, and ran track, and when the time came to choose between speed on the gridiron or speed on the track, he chose football.

“I like it more. I can run, jump, throw, catch, hit. In track, you’re just running straight.”
