BDC 11/18: Bills Top Jets 37-14

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on November 18, 2013 – 4:33 pm

— The Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets 37-14 on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills are now 4-7 on the season and rookie QB EJ Manuel improved his record at the Ralph to 3-1. The Bills were led on the day by Manuel and a dominating defense. Manuel completed 20 of 28 passes for 245 yards and two touchdown, one to WR T.J. Graham and one to WR Marquise Goodwin. Graham had two catches for 74 yards, which ties a career high for yardage. Goodwin had six catches for 81 yards, which are both career highs. With the two touchdown passes, Manuel is now in second place on the Bills’ rookie touchdown passes list with eight. The other offensive touchdown was punched in by FB Frank Summers from three yards out. It was Summers first career NFL touchdown. The defense made plays all over the field in putting together a dominating performance. They were able to create four turnovers by continuously pressuring Jets rookie QB Geno Smith. S Jairus Byrd came away with two interceptions on the day, the 20th and 21st of his career. He also became just the third Bill to post five multi-interception games in his career. S Da’Norris Searcy also had an interception on the day and he returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. It was his second defensive return touchdown on the season. DT Kyle Williams also contributed with a standout performance, as he had three tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. The two sacks put his season total at 7.0, which is a new career-high. The forced fumble was recovered by LB Manny Lawson at the Jets four yard line and led to the touchdown by Summers. Rookie MLB Kiko Alonso also continued his strong play by once again leading the team in tackles with 13. His season total now stands at 112 and he ranks second in the NFL.

WR Marquise Goodwin was a catalyst for the Bills offense yesterday, registering a career high six receptions for 81 yards to go along with a 43-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to put the Bills up 27-7 over the Jets. All three of Goodwin’s scores this season have come on 40+ yard receptions.

The Bills defense forced four turnovers yesterday (three interceptions and one forced fumble) and was led by S Jairus Byrd. Byrd notched two picks and a sack, becoming the third Bill in team history to record five multi-interception games in his career (Tom Janik – 6, Billy Atkins – 5).

Despite winds reaching 30 mph yesterday, Bills K Dan Carpenter was perfect on all three of his field goal attempts—hitting from 40, 42 and 43 yards.

MARQUISE GOODWIN, Buffalo Bills Wide Reciever
Q: How important was it that you responded after their first score with your touchdown?
A: Oh no, that has nothing to do with me. I have the easiest job on the field, just run fast down the field. The line there protecting the QB. He takes the correct drop and the running backs and tight ends are protecting. EJ just throws the ball. He throws a perfect ball and I just run under it. I have the easiest job. I give all the credit to those guys.

JAIRUS BYRD, Buffalo Bills Safety
Q:Are you having fun right now with the interceptions, you’re rushing, dropping back, and making plays?
A: Yeah, I’m having a lot of fun. Anytime I can play this game, especially with these guys. Kyle (Williams), guys like that who have been here. There’s a lot of new faces but I’ve kind of gotten comfortable and a feel for everyone in the locker room. These are just great guys in here and anytime you can go out there, and a lot of people use that saying of family but it really is. You can go out there and just play with your brothers out there and just have fun, there is nothing like it.
