BDC 12/23: Bills shutout Dolphins 19-0

Posted by Bills Daily Charge on December 23, 2013 – 9:40 am

— The Buffalo Bills defeated the Miami Dolphins 19-0 on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills improved their record to 3-2 in the division. The Bills relied on their ground game and an outstanding performance from their defense to earn the victory. On the ground, the Bills were led by RB Fred Jackson who had 111 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. It was Jackson’s first 100-yard rushing performance of the season. He became the third running back in Bills history to run for over 5,000 yards in his career, joining Thurman Thomas and O.J. Simpson. RB C.J Spiller chipped in with 77 yards on 20 carries and the Bills were able to gain 203 yards total on the ground for the day. The Bills defense came through in a big way as the held the Dolphins to just 103 total yards on the day. QB Ryan Tannehill seemed to be under constant pressure as the Bills racked up a season high seven sacks on the day. Their sack total for the season now stands at 56, which is a franchise record. DT Kyle Williams and rookie CB Nickell Robey led the way with two sacks apiece. The Bills also picked off the Dolphins twice, with CB Leodis McKelvin pulling in his first of the season and S Jim Leonhard grabbing his fourth for the year. With his second sack, Kyle Williams now has 10.5 on the season.  Williams, DE Mario Williams and DE Jerry Hughes are the second Bills trio with 10-plus sacks in a season (Bruce Smith, Bryce Paup, Phil Hansen in 1995).  K. Williams, M. Williams and Hughes are the first trio in the NFL with 10.0 sacks since La’Roi Glover, Joe Johnson and Darren Howard accomplished the feat for the New Orleans Saints in 2000. QB Thad Lewis made his fourth start of the season in place of injured QB EJ Manuel and was able to earn his second victory over the Dolphins on the season. Lewis completed 15 of his 25 passes for 193 yards and threw one interception. Bills K Dan Carpenter converted all four of his field goal attempts and has now made 31 of 34 on the season. He is the eighth kicker in Bills history to make 30 field goals in a season.

Led by a two sack day by DT Kyle Williams, the Buffalo Bills set a franchise record for sacks during a season with 56 breaking the team’s previous mark of 50 set in 1964. In addition Williams, Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes became the second Bills trio with 10-plus sacks in a season (Smith, Paup, Hansen in 1995).  Williams, M. Williams and Hughes are the first trio in the NFL with 10.0 sacks since La’Roi Glover, Joe Johnson and Darren Howard accomplished the feat for the New Orleans Saints in 2000.

Bills RB Fred Jackson had his biggest day of the season, tallying 111 yards and a score on 19 carries—the 15th 100 yard rushing performance of his career moving him into sole possesion of third place on the Bills all-time 100-yard rushing ranks.

Bills rookie CB Nickell Robey was all over the field yesterday, recording two sacks, three tackles for loss and a pass deflection.

Doug Marrone, Buffalo Bills Head Coach
On the team’s defensive performance…
Defensively, I think they were outstanding. Two of 14 on third downs, held them to a total of 103 yards. Those guys really came and they really played. It was an honor to be on that sideline and watch those guys perform.

Q: Can you talk about the effort of Fred Jackson?
A: I sit back and I try never to look at it from the standpoint of he just continues to amaze me. The way he goes about this business, I give him credit. Everyone knows we had some time with him; we took him out during this week to rest him a little bit. He’s taken some good shots along the year. Early on, I think maybe some other players—not talking about players on this team, I’m talking about other players that have had what he has—I’m not sure they can go out and perform like that. I give him a lot of credit and I admire him for that. That’s not an easy thing to do to play with that type of injury.

Nickell Robey, Buffalo Bills Cornerback
Q: What kind of feeling does it give a defense when you guys have an opponent right where you want them.
A: I mean it’s great. You can kind of see what’s going on before it happens. All the tendencies that they show look a lot clearer than normal, when you’ve got them backed up you can kind of have a feel of what’s going to come next. Especially the way we were stopping the run game today, we can see the passes coming out.
