EJ on Sunday a wait and see

Last week head coach Doug Marrone said he was “110 percent sure” that EJ Manuel would start Sunday’s game at New England. On Monday his description of Manuel’s availability for Sunday’s season finale had a different tone.

“EJ came in today and was with the trainers,” said Marrone. “I’m looking forward to seeing him out there tomorrow and how he feels.”

Tuesday is typically the players’ day off, but with Christmas on Wednesday this week, Marrone is having them practice Tuesday and have Wednesday off. It sounds as if Marrone wants to see Manuel go through practice and show if his mobility has improved. That was what kept Manuel out of last week’s game against Miami.

Marrone was asked if Manuel had a setback which changed his measure of confidence that the rookie QB would start on Sunday.

“Again when you say setback as far as everything that we’ve been doing, no, and it’s part of a process and we’ll get him out there on the field,” said Marrone. “We decided to rest him for the things that we wanted to do on the field to get the maximum amount of time. We’ll put him out there tomorrow.”

When asked if there is a chance EJ could miss Sunday’s game. Marrone did not rule it out.

“I think there’s always a chance,” he said. “There’s a chance Marquise Goodwin won’t play. There’s a chance that Aaron Williams might not be able to play. There’s a chance that someone could come in here tomorrow and not feel well. So it’s very difficult. I’m one of those guys I really don’t know a lot about when it comes down to the specifics of injuries. I’ve been that way since training camp, but I’m always pushing to try to get them out there and trying to get them to play.

“It’s a process and we’ll go out there tomorrow and get a peek at him.”
