While there was a smattering of Bills fans on hand in Charlotte there were significantly more fans wearing the orange and purple of Clemson University Friday night. Two of the highest profile playmakers in school history are both on the Bills roster in C.J. Spiller and Sammy Watkins, so there were a lot of number 28 and number 2 Clemson jerseys in the stands. The support made Watkins feel right at home.
“Most definitely,” Watkins said. “I felt like there were a lot of Clemson fans out there supporting us. We’ve got a group of guys that’s on the team, me, C.J., Jonathan Meeks and a lot of others. So it felt like the Clemson fans showed up and supported us.”
OL Chris Hairston and Antoine McClain are the other Clemson alums. For Watkins first game in an NFL venue, being just a short drive from the Clemson campus and seeing all the fans on hand to watch him play calmed his nerves.
“Playing here just made my transition easy,” he said. “I figured I played in this stadium with 60 thousand Clemson fans so it made my transition easier being out there on the field. Just to have my fans here felt like a college game with everybody screaming my name. It was great support.”
