He will only be serving in a backup capacity in the season opener at Chicago, but head coach Doug Marrone believes a week is enough time for veteran QB Kyle Orton to be ready to execute the game plan if something happened to EJ Manuel.
“I think you’d be surprised what he can do,” said Marrone Monday. “We’ll work during the week and see how much he feels comfortable handing it. Probably more than you would think because of his experience.”
Orton was in agreement that he would be ready for Sunday’s game in his role as backup to EJ Manuel having been through a similar situation before when time was short.
“I did a midseason switch to Kansas City where you’re kinda right in it right away,” said Orton. “Mentally, I’m going to be fine. I got some good work in today physically and we’ve got six days to go. I’ve really put a lot of work in the last 48-72 hours. Physically it went really good (Monday), and I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”
