How the original plan for EJ was compromised

When EJ Manuel was drafted in round one of the 2013 draft there was a specific plan in place to introduce him to the NFL game and develop him. It unfortunately all went out the window before his first NFL preseason was over. So how much has the deviation from the original plan to bring Manuel along affected him? GM Doug Whaley provided his take on it.

In an appearance Wednesday on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550, Whaley acknowledged that the plan to let Manuel sit and learn his rookie year was lost when Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion in Week 3 of the 2013 preseason. Being forced to improvise after Kolb was lost for the season, Whaley was asked where that has put Manuel now entering year three of his career.

“Year three I would say he’s probably a tad behind, but we’re excited to see… switch years. If last year was his first year, I know he’s further along this year than he was last year from that experience,” Whaley said. “That was the original plan. Sit behind Kevin Kolb learn, one or two years and then see what he can do.

“So this year we want to see a step. Will it be the ultimate step? That’s up to him. I’ve seen he’s gone through trials and tribulations. He’s learned from them. And the one thing I know about him is if he does make it it’ll be because of his work ethic and if he doesn’t make it it won’t be because of his work ethic.”
