Teams tried to sign away O’Leary

The Bills had sixth-round pick Nick O’Leary stashed on their practice squad all season, but as is the case this time of year, NFL clubs go hunting for players on other teams’ practice squads looking for future contributors to sign to their 53-man roster. Teams were doing that early in the week with O’Leary, which is what prompted the Bills to promote him to their active roster Tuesday.

Head coach Rex Ryan admitted as much on Wednesday.

“Yes, there definitely were teams that were interested in O’Leary,” Ryan said. “I’m not going to say who. This time of year in particular, a lot of times people will start yanking guys off people’s practice squads that they have a good feeling about, and so obviously, O’Leary was a guy who interested them, even though he had no catches in the preseason. It’s the body of work that he did on the college tape that people were interested in. He’s really elevated his play during this time. He’s gotten better and better, gotten used to the speed of this game, and really is learning our system. He’ll give a good account of himself.”

If O’Leary wanted he could’ve chosen to sign with another team, but with the Bills willing to pull him up to their 53-man roster to keep him, it was easier to remain in an offense that he’s familiar with and help contribute to the team’s playoff aspirations in the final month of the season.

Ryan confirmed that O’Leary will be dressed for Sunday’s game in Philadelphia and play.
