A defensive playmaker has been a general need listed by Bills GM Doug Whaley as something to add to that side of the ball for Buffalo’s roster. Not surprisingly, ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper has projected a defensive lineman to the Bills at 19 overall in his latest mock draft. What’s interesting is Kiper didn’t project a pass rushing specialist.
Kiper went with an all-around defensive lineman in Clemson’s Kevin Dodd. Here was his book on the Bills’ pick at 19.

Mario Williams is on the way out, and the difference between Buffalo being a playoff team or an also-ran is going to come from the Bills’ ability to make major strides on the defensive side of the ball. Rex Ryan will get an NFL-ready defender who won’t just make plays in the backfield as a pass-rusher, but also has the strength to defend the run and instincts to find the ball.
