Clayton: T.O. is a legit Hall of Famer

Terrell Owens is one of the finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2017. A second-year eligible finalist, Owens is a legitimate Hall of Famer in the eyes of ESPN NFL analyst and Hall of Fame selector John Clayton.

In an appearance on the John Murphy Show, Clayton acknowledges Owens unceremonious departures from teams like the 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys in his prime, but maintains that you cannot argue his career numbers.

“Look at his numbers. That’s the best argument,” Clayton said. “One of the most productive and dominating receivers of his time. What held him back last year was three of the teams that had him in his prime got rid of him. There’s something there, but how can you not look at those numbers and say he’s not a Hall of Famer? Every year during that time whether your liked him or not you looked at him as one of the best receivers in football and that makes him a Hall of Famer.”

Owens is second all-time in receiving yards (15,934), third all-time in receiving touchdowns (153) and eighth all-time in receptions (1,078). He was a five-time All-Pro and went to six Pro Bowls. He was also a member of the All Decade Team for the 2000s.

Owens played one season for the Bills in 2009.
