Da’Norris Searcy, Buffalo Bills Safety
On the mix at safety…
“It was the same thing we did last OTAs when we mixed in guys. I was able to work with both Duke (Williams) and (Jonathan) Meeks last offseason and also during training camp. It’s not too much of a big deal. We’re still out there learning the scheme together. As long as we communicate to be on the same page it doesn’t matter who you’re back there with.”

Jim Schwartz, Buffalo Bills Defensive Coordinator
On the Bills secondary…
“…the secondary is where I’ve been the most impressed. It’s one thing, you don’t really see those guys out there because e a lot of guys aren’t fully participating and just doing some individual here and there. I think we have some depth at corner, at nickel and we have a really good young player, we lost Jairus Byrd, but we were able to keep an exciting young player in Aaron Williams here. I’m excited with all three levels of the defense, but probably more so the secondary than anything else.”

Q: How have you settled in?
A: It’s exciting to go back to work and it’s exciting to get on the field and be able put our hands on these players. Each step along the way we’ve done a little bit more. Phase one the players just working out with some meetings, phase two we can work some individual drills and phase three you really start to put it together. We can see the progress from the guys. It’s nice, the weather is nicer and we’re able to get outside. I think we’re making some progress there.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Macky MacPherson, Buffalo Bills Center
On getting an opportunity with the Bills…
“Some teams don’t take that intangible factor of whether the person is smart or whether they have good leadership skills. There are some teams out there that just want a guy who they think is a big enough player. Luckily, I latched onto a team here with the Bills that cares more about not just your size but care about the kind of football player you are.”

BDC 5/20: Bills Wrap-Up Rookie Minicamp
Posted by on May 20, 2014 – 10:25 am
DAILY REPORT
— The Bills closed out their rookie minicamp Monday and Buffalo’s young players got some valuable coaching in advance of voluntary OTAs next week. Click here for complete coverage of the Bills 2014 Rookie Minicamp.
THIS DAY IN BILLS HISTORY
May 20, 1968 – PHIL HANSEN BIRTHDAY
DE Phil Hansen played for the Bills from 1991-2001 and was inducted on to the Wall of Fame in 2011. He played in 170 games over his Bills career and had 61.5 sacks. Also was the winner of the Ralph C. Wilson Distinguished Service Award in 2006.

WR Sammy Watkins runs a route during the Bills 2014 Rookie Minicamp.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver
Q: Coach Marrone said you were in here at 6:45 am on your own running routes. What time did you get here and why did you come in so early?
A: For me, I think I need to work on my routes more than anything. I have the speed and size and the ability, now it’s just down to the details and the little things. Initially the cornerbacks are great, they know the details of your route and you have to be crisp and right on everything you do and have to make everything look the same. I woke up this morning and that’s what I was trying to do. Stay straight, keep my head up and work on my routes and my breaking points.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Doug Marrone, Buffalo Bills Head Coach
Q: How do you balance it out in a rookie minicamp when you have guys like Sammy and the high picks that need to assimilate in to the team and you also have guys trying out for a spot?
A: I’ll say the same thing, and I’ve said this every year I’ve been in the NFL since my first year. I really don’t care how you got here. I don’t care if you were drafted. I don’t care if you were signed in an open tryout. I don’t care if you’re a seventh round draft pick, I really don’t care. All I care about is what you’re going to do now that you’re here. That’s the one thing I control. I control who plays and who doesn’t play. If you want to play, do it right there. All that draft pick stuff and all those other things, that’s all for the media, that’s’ all for you guys. You can talk about that all you want, but I tell them that flat out every year I’ve been in the league and I truly believe that. I don’t really care. Just because you’re a second round pick or a first round pick, it doesn’t mean you’re going to automatically play. We’ve got guys that have been on this team that are fighting for their lives and fighting for a job. That’s just the way it is. If we start playing people based on where they’re drafted, you’re going to lose a lot of games.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Cyrus Kouandjio, Buffalo Bills Offensive Tackle
Q: How do you feel about coming from winning programs and ending up with a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 14 years?
“Personally, I don’t know why we haven’t been a winning team, but I’m a winner. That’s what I do. So I come here with the intention to win games, no matter what. I don’t care, I want to win and I’m going to do what I have to do to win. Whether it’s motivate whoever or whatever, if I see anything not right or see something missing in a team or characteristics missing of a winning team… I’ve been with two winning programs, I lost about seven games in my life. I know what a winning program looks like and I know the trends and I’ve seen trends in a winning program. If I see something a little bit off, I will say something. I have high hopes for this team. I believe in this team and I believe in these men. I see nothing but winners around me. I came here, I saw the attitude on the team and these guys, and I loved it. Everybody is willing to win and everybody is willing to have good plays and to work from what I’ve seen so far in one day. We’ll see.”

Q: You keep talking about Mr. Wilson. Is that going to be the driving thought on your mind all year?
RB: It will be on my mind every day. As you guys know, he loved the Draft. We thought about him a lot as we led up to it. About the trades, he would have loved the last three days. He loved to wheel and deal. He would have really enjoyed it. It’s tough to get up every day and not think about him. He is the leader of this organization and we will honor him every day.

BDC 5/9: Bills Select WR Watkins on Day One
Posted by on May 9, 2014 – 2:32 pm
DAILY REPORT
— The Buffalo Bills traded with the Cleveland Browns for the fourth overall selection of the 2014 NFL Draft last night and selected wide receiver Sammy Watkins out of Clemson. Watkins is one of only two players in Clemson history to generate over 5,000 all-purpose yards (5,129) and also with 3,000 yards receiving (3,391).
— Buffalo made Watkins just the second wide receiver in Clemson history to be drafted in the Top 10, joining Jerry Butler (1979, fifth overall by Buffalo). He is also just the fifth Clemson wide receiver to be selected in the first round in NFL Draft history.
— The Bills head into Day Two of the NFL Draft this evening with two selections: the ninth pick in the second and third rounds (41st overall and 73rd overall). Round Two begins at 7:00 p.m.
PHOTOS OF THE DAY
WR Sammy Watkins poses for a photo with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected by Buffalo with the fourth overall selection of the 2014 NFL Draft as the Bills draft room reacts after the selection.
QUOTES OF THE DAY
Doug Whaley, Buffalo Bills General Manager
Q: Why make this move and what do you think about Sammy Watkins?
Doug Whaley: Dynamic playmaker. That’s what this game is all about, making plays. This game is about making plays and surrounding our quarterback with playmakers. He’s automatically going to make our quarterback better and us better as a team. I do want to start this by saying this all goes back to Russ Brandon. He allowed us to make this move and he okayed it and was willing to give up the resources and future picks to go up and get a guy that we think will help us get to where we need to be.
Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver
Q: What do you feel you can contribute and bring to the table right away in the NFL?
A: As a player I think I bring a lot to the table. You’re going to get a great, you’re going to get a hard player, get a guy that loves the game and a guy that understands the game, understands the power of preparation. I think if I just keep doing what I’ve been doing at Clemson it will translate to the NFL.

On being prepared for draft day…
“Chance favors the prepared mind and when you put the work in before it is fun. All of our work is done right now so when the draft begins everyone is calm, cool, and collective. We have the board set and watch the names peel off and a pick or two before us we discuss the 3 or 4 names out there.”

The Bills selected OL Jim Ritcher of North Carolina State with the 16th pick in the 1980 NFL Draft.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Doug Whaley, Buffalo Bills General Manager
On potentially adding another wide receiver via the draft…
“We’re very excited about the receivers we have on campus right now. I keep harping back, we’re set up, if a guy is there with our pick whenever that pick is be it one, eight, nine or at 20, if he’s the guy we think can get us to the playoffs, there’s nothing that will preclude us from taking that guy. That’s the beauty of how we set it up this year.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Doug Whaley, Buffalo Bills General Manager
Q: You’re familiar with how the draft has worked in Buffalo over the last four years. What is different now that you are the GM?
Doug Whaley: I don’t look at it that way. I look at it as the Buffalo Bills draft. These guys up here, the scouts and everybody in this building has helped us and will help us pick the right players. I don’t say it’s my draft, it’s not the coach’s draft, it’s the Buffalo Bills draft. I’m going to lean on my wise council that I have around me and that’s the only way I know how to do it.
